I know something about. I have been corresponding with David for about the last 6 or 7 years. He is quite the liberal in fact very much in line with another David I know. On the first two Dire Straits albums he played rhythm guitar. By the time of Making Movies he was off doing his own stuff. It has been reported that his tracks he played on were re-done to cut him out. I first heard his solo stuff for the album "Release" in around 1983 which would have been 2 or 3 years after Making Movies. Anyhow he and the brother Mark have no love loss for each other. He even reported that Mark was trying to cut him out of any royaties when a Best of Album came out.
I had long lost that first album "Release" when I was scouring the net around 6 or 7 years ago when I found his site and he had all of his albums for sale. I started emailing him about various things and one thing lead to another and I had him design a website for me. He actually did a great job on it!
He came over to play in L.A. about a year ago and it was my one chance to meet him but I could not get away for the weekend. He just released his 8th solo album around a month ago and if memory serves used one or two Straits alum on it. Anyhoo theres some information
