Your best option would be to use a stand alone imager like Norton Ghost that can run off the CD without a OS. Make an image to your outboard drive, disconnect it, then do your partiton/format work on your onboard drive. Reconnect your outboard drive, start Ghost and re-image your Onboard drive. After you check the re-image, you can re pertition /format the outboard. You can pick up an older version of Ghost on new egg or e-bay for about 10 bucks.
