Scoff if you must, but Brian Wilson's "That Lucky Old Sun" is, hands down, my favorite recent musical release. One of the blurbs on the packaging reads something like "no one would have expected a masterpiece out of 65-yr-old Brian Wilson, but he just may have delivered one." I agree. Some will hear this album and call it sophomoric or whatever. It isn't maudlin like most singer-songwriter discs will tend to be. Instead it is bright and sunny like the gush from a bite of tangerine. It is one of the few discs from the past several years that I would call not just good, but "necessary." Enough of the sad-sack sorority sisters and painters of gloom and doom. We need more music like this--happy music that just happens to be very well made.Brian Wilson's "That Lucky Old Sun" makes me happy.
