I have strong feelings on issues like these. Ive not read The Giver, but Ive read some Harry Potter.
Books like the Harry Potter series open a childs mind to all sorts of ridiculous idealslike positive self-image, confidence, independence, and respect for individuality not to mention reinforcement of positive values. All terrible notions that could very well turn our children into Pagan evil-evildoers.
I think the puritanical blindfolds of overly conservative folks with say in these matters, prevent them from being able to see past the wizards hat on the cover to the praiseworthy message written in the pages. No doubt, many of them havent even attempted to read the book.
Kids love these books because they invoke (should that word be censored?) the ability to imagine...something that seems to have fallen to the wayside in recent years. While they are reading, children dont recognize the positive messages woven into the story. Their little minds absorb them, nonetheless, and when the book has ended, they want more.
I spent a lot of years in a household that restricted experiences I feel that every child should be entitled to.
When I was catapulted into the real world just in time for middle school, it was incredibly hard for me to assimilate. I couldnt find my niche, I had no idea who I was, and I suffered for it in so many ways. My self-esteem was rock bottom and I felt completely alone. Maybe Harry Potter could have helped me then.

: I noticed the message about some books being questioned or even banned in schools. Well, as an educator of fifth grade students, I wanted to get in my 2 cents.
: First of all, Harry Potter books are sparking an interest in reading that I have not seen in my 10 years of teaching. Students who normally would not pick up a book are now begging their parents to buy them the next edition. To me, this is a wonderful event! To many, it is the mark of the devil taking over our country.
: There is a local school who is facing the decision of banning the Harry Potter books form their schools. Now, I have no problem if an individual does not want their child to read certain material, but I do have a problem with certain people making a decision for the rest of the children.
: There is another wonderful book that is under much criticism. The book is called, "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. This book is about a society in the future that has no pain, no decisions, no crime, no hunger, etc. It sound great right? Well, you will need to read the book to find out the horror of this community. I give and recommend this book to everyone. It is not just a children's book.
: I suggest that everyone on this board check out the following books that are being banned all over the country :
: The Giver by Lois Lowry
: My Brother Sam is Dead ..forget the author?
: Let me know your thoughts!!!
