Watching the news and another bomb has went off in Baghdad and early reports are that at least 20 people have been killed. So far, at least 300 Iraqi police officers have been killed in Iraq.

I am astounded at our collective terrible lack of understanding towards the Middle East. It is like our government has completely ignored history and culture and does not understand or care to understand the Middle East.

But what is really alarming is that it might not even matter if Bin Laden is captured or not. Don't get me wrong - he deserves his punishment, but it seems like Iraq has turned into a flashpoint that we don't realize yet and from many Middle East experts, no end is in sight (and is that not hard to believe when thinking of the battles between Israel and Palestine?).

One last observation: unless there some better word or concept, is it not Orwellian that George Bush's re-election might be determined on Iraq, rather than the capture of Bin Laden? Right now, it seems as if things continue the way they are in Iraq, that election wise, the capture of bin Laden might not make Bush's re-election a done deal.
