His name is Dan Bern. That's the professional name that appears on albums and concert posters. He went back to Lithuania (home of his parents and ancestors, many killed in the Holocaust) and met a woman who knew some of his family when their name was Bernstein. This, I gather, was very moving/unsettling/profound, and he began to express his wish to be called by his original family name of Bernstein. I believe that is how his friends address him, though he doesn't appear to have a problem with his other name as it's still on top of his records and on the tickets I buy to go see him.

He is really fabulous. I would suggest for albums "New American Language" (Messenger Records) as a starting point, or his self-titled debut, which was on Work/Sony. Check him out live if you can.
