Kevin G.:
I know abortion is the issue most passionate to you so I'll address it. We've been there before but I have no problem reiterating my beliefs. If a woman's life or health are in danger, I firmly believe the choice is hers. Similarly, if she has been raped or if incest is involved, it's up to her. I have mixed feelings concerning other scenarios. Part of me still believes it's her call but part of me recognizes the rights of the child/fetus. So what to do? The present legal situation, however imperfect, is one I can agree with. Now understand, Kevin, we have far, far too many abortions in this world. As the saying goes, I'd like to see abortion be "safe, legal, and rare". I must tell you that some of my fellow liberals don't seem to have any ambivalence in this matter, and that troubles me. I believe there is common ground where pro-choicers and pro-lifers can meet. We can do more to publicize and make available contraception. We can make adoption less costly. We can do more to provide scared, poor women with the wherewithal to have a chance at a better life. However, some conservatives are unwilling to aid on this latter point (with health care, subsidized housing/daycare,job training). If we really want fewer abortions it's going to cost money, possibly a lot of money. Lastly, we have to change attitudes. What a tall order! These are my thoughts.
