my first two thoughts were southwest u.s./utah and western ireland (i was there early january... cold... midnight at the cliffs of moher... like to have a look in the summer).

since those were mentioned, i thought again and came up with haast pass in new zealand (green and sparsely populated, in some ways like western ireland) and central australia around ayers rock (dry red desert, in some ways like the southwest)...
