PRH, that does sound interesting. I have been intrigued by Noise music recordings for a while now, but triggered by hearing this compilation called Sound City (the soundtrack to an Architectural project of Rem Koolhaas, with the Harvard project for the city..). The first track was by Merzbow (Masami Akita), which has to be heard to be believed. Lots of the tracks are in a similar vein, with some great environmental recording by Jason Benett and others. Best listened to in an altered...no, we won't go into that...
I don't know where you can find the CD now, though. I got it from the back pocket of the book. It's probably on the net somewhere though.
Robert heard it at my house once, and thought it was "too weird". But it really isn't. Makes perfect sense if you really listen..

P.S. Then again, there's always the Van Halen intro on the F.U.C.K. album, where he takes the power drill close to the pickups for that rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound.
