You seem to forget that time when Clinton did retaliate the cry from the republican side was " when you want to divert attention from your personal problems, start a war."
You seem to be leaving out the fact that we did invade afghanistan following 9-11, and that most of the people who opposed the war in Iraq opposed that as well.
This is just not true.
I don't care what the Republicans said. He was the leader, and he did not lead because he was more concerned about politics. You seem to think that the fact that he was so craven he would endanger the American people for the sake of his approval rating is somehow the Republicans fault. That is one hell of an excuse. " I would do the right thing but people will be mad at me".
As to your second point, I said MOST, not all. And yes, there were protests, and the usual suspects in left wing tomes like the NY Times, and groups like ANSWER out there blabbing about George Bush declaring war on "brown people" etc. This is all easily checked. I think that the fact that Afghanistan did not turn into the same Vietnam scenario has created a serious case of revisionist history here. Funny how everyone wants to claim they supported it now.
