Yes...Los Lobos...I will say that I don't think you can trust my opinion because I've been such a big fan of theirs for so long. So, what I'll tell you is certainly colored by my love for their music. The thing is they are very diverse. The early records are very rootsy. What it breaks down to though is there are the records before "Kiko" and the records after "Kiko"...to me "Kiko" was the record from them that made me go WOW! I mean I was enjoying them up to that point but did not expect where they went with "Kiko" and since they went there it's been an amazing trip...for me at least.
Their record "The Neighborhood" which came out a couple years before "Kiko" seemed huge to me when I heard it but "Kiko" I think was their big moment. All the records that came after it wear it's influence. It also happens to be the record that has "Two Janes" on it. So, I guess I'd tell you to start with that.
My favorite records from Los Lobos are:
Kiko
Colossal Head
This Time
Good Morning Aztlan
I'm really enjoying the new one "The Ride" too but it's kind of an all star collection with a few songs with Los Lobos doing their thing and on the rest they play the backing band to folks like Elvis Costello, Bobby Womack, Mavis Staples, Richard Thompson etc...
Again like I said don't trust me though because I rate these guys the best American rock band of the last couple decades...to me they are it...right up there with folks like The Band...I think I'd put Wilco up there with them...as far as bands go...just great stuff...
My coolest Los Lobos moment...before one of their shows I got to go record shopping with them. I had a blast! We never left the jazz section.
I guess you might find it interesting that when I talked to Peter Mulvey we did talk about Los Lobos...he brought them up I think...
