You know, this looks like it would have been a perfect film for Mr. Baerwald to provide some music for...and Sean Penn is in it...

The screening in competition of Michael Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 was the event of the day. This inquiry into the Bush government's foeign policy was joined in the race for the Palme d'Or by Woman is the Future of Man, an intimate tale directed by Hong Sang-soo and Hans Weingartner's Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei (The Edukators), a film that marked the return of German cinema to the competition 11 years after Wim Wender's In weiter Ferne, so nah! (Faraway, so Close!).

The celebrated composer Lalo Schifrin held a Leçon de Musique (Music Masterclass) revealing the secrets behind the music to films such as Dirty Harry, Cool Hand Luke and Bullitt. Later in the day, 20 European culture ministers and Mrs. Viviane Reding, the European Education and Culture Commissioner, walked up the red carpet for the screening of The Edukators.

Sean Penn made the trip to Cannes in support of The Assassination of Richard Nixon, a drama directed by Niels Mueller screening in Un Certain Regard. Also showing in the section was Hotel, Austrian director Jessica Hausner's third film that reinvents the thriller.

The Un Certain Regard section today welcomes first-time director Niels Mueller to Cannes with his film, The Assassination of Richard Nixon. The feature takes place in 1974 at the height of the Watergate scandal that would eventually lead to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Sam Bicke, a man on the edge of a breakdown, played by Sean Penn, is horrified by all forms of betrayal and lies, and so, with a gun hidden in a prosthetic arm, he plans to hijack a plane and attack the biggest of all the liars: the President of the United States himself.

Produced by Alfonso Cuaron and his production company, Anhelo, The Assassination of Richard Nixon, in the running for the Caméra d'Or, also stars Don Cheadle, Naomi Watts and Jack Thompson. Niels Mueller says that Sean Penn was always 100-percent involved in the film. “He never left any doubt about his commitment and each time there was a production problem he used his weight to solve it. Without him the film would never have been made.”

The team of The Assassination of Richard Nixon were in town today for its screening in the Un Certain Regard section. Present for the post-screening press conference were the director Niels Mueller, actors Sean Penn and Jack Thompson, as well as producers Jorge Vergara and Alfonso Cuaron. Highlights.

Sean Penn on his involvement: “It's an unusual film. You know, I always try to keep up good relations on the set and this film was helped by such support and such confidence from its producers. I've never seen it happen like this before and so I felt that I had to be equal to that. About the character I've never tried to be love by the audience; I just act according to what it says in the script.”

Sean Penn on the casting: “We've been preparing this project for a long time. The film was always going to be made with these actors. [Naomi Watts, Don Cheadle and Jack Thompson] “I worked with Naomi Watts on 21 Grams. I just suggested she read the script. She agreed and liked it. It was as simple as that.”

Sean Penn on Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and the US political climate: “I haven't seen Michael Moore's film, but I respect him a lot and I'm certain that Fahrenheit 9/11 reflects the current situation. Personally I never thought I'd find myself in Cannes feeling regrets about Richard Nixon!”

Outside the Baltimore airport, Sam Bicke conceals a gun under an orthopedic leg brace and goes to board his plane.
