Kevin, everybody....
I spoke with Kyle on the phone today, finally getting through. The cordless phone at the Nurses station was working, and after a few minutes he came on. There were some problems with that earlier.
Well, he has been through some hell, and the hospitalization is due to a culmination of his spinal cord condition (for those who don't know, Kyle had a C6 level cord injury which renders him quadriplegic except for some proximal arm muscle function), depression and some personal/family issues. Very complex situation, I only think I began to scratch the surface in talking with him. He seemed to indicate that his home situation is just as problematic as his physical impairments. He has been in hospital 3 months so far. He is eligible to be discharged now, and was going to go home briefly today. He will probably come back though to take advantage of some group therapy and other treatments to help mood, especially.
He did tell me that he can't really get into music right now, and I certainly understand. He had only one surgical procedure during this hospitalization, and that was to remove some fluid from the spinal cord area.
He is very appreciative of us thinking about him and keeping in touch. I'm sure he'd welcome hearing from more of us. Peter T has his number and so do I. Mail me here if you want to call. Otherwise I think his address was posted earlier for Get Well cards, letters, and gifts.
Let us keep praying for Kyle's emotional and physical recovery. Keep sending the love.
Gene
