Ironically it was the left who first criticized "liberals" as people who espoused ideals of equality and fairness but who lacked the spine to back them up or who became reactionary if "liberal" policies infringed on them too much. (Watch the film "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" or listen to Phil Ochs "Love Me I'm a Liberal").
The term doesn't mean shit anymore except to the right wingers who wield it as a mallet against anyone who doesn't fall into lockstep with their agenda. They can call us whatever they want. We're still voting their asses out of office in November.
