It's interesting- and perhaps telling- that none of our Bush supporters have commented on my post (c'mon, some of you read it!) Perhaps it's just that they- like President Bush- don't know what the fuck to do about the whole tragic, sorry mess in Iraq.
Bush and his neo-con buddies have created a no-win scenario that will only continue its death spiral into civil war and rulers every bit the equal of Saddam Hussein. What sane person can say that the world is a safer place after this action? Are Iraqi's better off? Maybe, unless you're one of the hapless bystanders caught in one of the daily car bombs designed to intimidate civilians cooperating with US forces.
Are Americans safer? Well, since there was no threat in the first place I'd have to say no. Certainly for the Guardsmen in Baghdad the world is a far more lethal place than it was a year and a half ago.
What to do? Even if Kerry is elected he's inheriting an unimaginable problem. He can't just pull out. My prediction: we will stay in until it all collapses and we will have to evacuate just like Saigon.
The other possibility: Americans will protest against the war in numbers large enough to make it politically untenable. But that would only happen if the draft were reinstated. And remember- 56,000 Americans died before the end of the Vietnam war. I'm afraid we've only scratched the surface and that Senator McCain's prediction of a 5, 10, or 15 year war are likely.
So Bush-Babies: how do you defend this predicament?
