You seem to be forgetting that up until the 70's there was a SS slush fund that the Congress voted to steal from by making it available as General Fund funds. And like government does they wasted it.

Nonetheless the country would have gotten a much better return with 5% simple interest. Compound isn't available except to charge the workingman.-)
