An insurgent is a person who rebels against the government or the ruling authority. There is currently no government in Iraq, and the US army has no authority in the country. It is an illegally occupying force which is there purely by dint of military force. Therefore the individuals being referred to as "insurgents" in the media - especially in the American media - are in fact resistance fighters, or, if you prefer, freedom fighters.
