Here's an alternate "theory" for you Pat:

A big, bearded man named God sat on a big throne up in the sky and decided to breathe life into some dead chemicals because He loved them so much. And because he loved them so much he created them in His own image. Except that he made some of the chemicals White, and some were not White. That made the chemicals very confused and they fought for the rest of creation over who really was made in God's image. God never bothered to explain his original thinking but, oh well, whatever, nevermind...
