Who is to stand up and fight for the majority of military members who join up out of economic hardship? When I was in the service, of all the people I asked why they signed up, I cannot recall one person's number one reply being that of "patriotism". I'm not saying these young people are not patriotic, but when asked why they joined, the number one reason was "I needed a job" and number two was, "college money".
That's a poor comeback on a reason to get in. There are other jobs and there are other ways to get  "college money".  It's not like it is their "only choice"

In my opinion, some sort of service should almost be mandatory and my main reason for this is that if the children of the influential were truly at risk then different and better decisions would be made prior to war.
You have a point here but somehow the rich and politically connected would get some kind of deferment and the left leaning draft dodgers would head back up to Canada. So we are back to 1968 all over again.

By the way has anyone tried the Google toolbar spell check?
It will actually correct your posts while your are on this site as opposed to cutting and putting in Word then back again.  Nice feature for the IE users on the site
