As much as I would dread my sons having to serve in a war (especially this one), I have to agree with you Eric. In a militaristic country such as this, all should share the strain.
In Israel, all young men and women must serve, unless there is physical/mental handicap. For men I think it is 2 years starting at age 18, no exceptions. All receive basic training, but then I think can chose which branch of military they'd like to serve (there is usually a waiting list to get into the Air Force because it is very prestigious) and are trained in other areas. Also, all able-bodied Israeli citizens are automatically "draftable" at times of military emergency. Since they all have training, and skills in particular areas, they are given some form of code usually by telephone or on public radio that tells them to report for duty to a particular location at time of war.
