Just got into a serious pissing match with my wife as to the lack of active duty military repsonse to the apocalypse in New Orleans. We're both hot right now. I called her an apologist. She didn't like that. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990 within 4 days -- 4 DAYS! --- we had the 82nd Airborne Division on the ground in the northern desert of Saudi Arabia with nothing but their rucksacks and duffle bags for weeks. The logistical tail to support them was extremely limited initially. They were on their own.Now I ask you -- why aren't active duty troops on the ground NOW in New Orleans to support the evacuation. It's been 4 days. Unlike National Guard units, active duty units can deploy almost immediately. They can't police -- it violates the Posse Comitatus Act -- so I'm not complaining about that. But they can be put to extraordinary use doing other things. Being a current reservist and former active duty soldier, I'm just positively disgusted at what I think is a limited immediate response to this by the active duty component. The National Guard is coming soon and with full force. And the Pentagon is announcing all kinds of support that is on the way. However, I just think it's a tremendous failing of our military and civilian leadership that they haven't already sent active duty military units to support the short-term evacuation effort. It's been 4 days.
