while i was in manhattan in august, i saw several plays in the fringeNYC festival. one of them was a one-woman piece called Widow of Abraham it was fantastic. well-written and well-performed. the widow was married to a man who ended up in guantanamo. gutwrenching. no idea if this is gonna be performed much, but with a good actress... i'd recommend it.
WIDOW OF ABRAHAM - by David Valdez GreenwoodWidow of Abraham asks just what it would take to transform an ordinary woman into a terrorist. After a terrible loss under mysterious circumstances, a New York widow begins to interrogate the people around her to see just who deserves to live and die. Her story spans Manhattan, Afghanistan, Cuba and beyond as she develops a terrifying vision for her country.Widow of Abraham is unusual in that depictions of terror in our time rarely show the human dilemma of a New York liberal who feels there is no other way to change the world. With its blend of mystery, politics, and dark comedy, this 90-minute one-woman show differs in form from the standard straightforward comedies, dramas, parodies and musicals. It serves as a striking introduction to the work of David Valdes Greenwood, a rising playwright fresh from the Humana Festival.Audiences will experience a psychological thriller pulled from the most terrifying headlines of current events, featuring a tour de force performance by actress Anne Thibault, who plays the title widow and the vivid characters she meets on her secret quest throughout the city.
