No, I have not read it. It was recently recommended to me though, so sort of interesting that you bring it up. I get the impression (having read the few pages that are available to view on amazon) that's it's something more than a survival story. Actually, when it was recommended to me it did not seem to be recommended to me at all for its survival angle.

There seems to be a bit of symbolism going with this young idealist wandering off into splendid isolation to die with his ideals. I would suppose you could expand on this idea in a lot of different ways in the current political environment.

Anyway, I'll take your question and the other recommendations here as reason to go out and buy the book today. Everyone seemed to like it quite a bit and I did like what I read online from it. There was a story there that reminded me of something from my own past and that hooked me. I'll make some comments while I'm reading it.
