I took my nephew to see Zathura this weekend. I really enjoyed the film. I never did take a liking to Jumanji, and this is basically a redeux but I think the retro sci-fi setting was more to my liking. PLUS the film mostly avoids some of the things that suck in kids movies these days. The kids talk like real kids, not in bad one-liners, aside from a mention of Sportscenter and Sponge Bob, there is almost no propduct placement that I noticed and some even of the scares of the film are really good.
More importantly my 12 year old nephew really seemed to like the film.
But one of the things I really noticed and liked was the score for the film. Jon Favreau seems to have lifted musical elements from everything from "Forbidden Planet" to "The Abyss" in putting together the music. The score is by a John Debney .
And that's my $.02.
