Interesting historical tidbits, Brad.
I was underway on the USS Tunny when Ronnie Raygun announced that US subs would be converted to carry cruise missiles. We pulled into port in Japan a few days later, and were greeted by thousands of protestors. They had the base completely closed down about four hours each day, upset that our boat could be carrying nukes.
Apparently they thought we were already Tomahawk capable. Kind of funny that they would think this, since a retrofit on a nuke boat takes years.
But even funnier is the fact that US subs had been carrying Subrocs since 1965. Lovely little nukes designed to vaporize all the water in an enemy port at the start of hostilities. Not sure when the port visits to Japan began, but they were definitely happening in the early 80's, and in violation of that anti-nuke agreement.
But hey, what's a treaty between whitey and some "savages"?
