Not sure Pat, I did enjoy the new song and a couple of the tracks sound a lot better. Not sure if they should have messed with adding the strings to some of the tracks. If you want to own all of his recordings, I say yes! If you haven't purchased the proper albums, do so first. "Bryter Layter" being me fav! I'm not to happy with his estate (Sister).and how protective they are about his catalog and all of his masters and demos.
How so?
There are quite a few Nick Drake clones on the market at the moment. Two of them are doing quite well with critics and audiences:
Bryter Layter huh. In reading the reviews that seems to be the one that a lot of people like the least. Lot's of producing on that one. I think my least favorite one is the 1st one 5 Leaves but that could change next week :). I'm listening to Bryter Layer as I'm writing this "Please give me a second grace"
Jose Gonzalez, from Sweden and Alexi Murdoch from Scottland via L.A. Both are taking his sound a wee bit further, while maintaning a smidgen of originality.
He is even listed as an influence for the Cure. Jack Johnson for sure copies him.
Have you ever thought about how Nick Drake, Cat Stevens and Jackson Browne kinda mirror each other. I mean look at Nick's three albums, then Cat's trio rcordings of, "Tea For The Tillerman", Teaser And The Firecat..." and "Mona Bone Jakon"..."
Well you know Stephen was locked away over a year with tuberculosis and wrote Mona Bone Jakon, Tea and Teaser all during that time.
Nothing after that was good and by the time of Back to Earth pitiful.
or Jackson's "For Everyman", "Late For The Sky and "The Pretender". Three killer records in a row, then boom, kinda fizzle out ? Wonder would have became of Nick's record output if he remained alive?
Well if Time of No Reply or Made to Love Magic are any indication I would say yes he would have more great records. Pity he did not live to see the success
