Personally I think "Making Movies" and their first album were their best. "Comminique" suffered from the dreaded "sophmore jinx". "Brothers in Arms" was a great album but unfortunately it got the sh*t played out of it. I think "Love Over Gold" is very good and underrated. It was a departure from their previous albums. It sounded big and lush and I really liked it. "Twisting By The Pool"......I heard most of it and never bought it.
As far as MK solo, I liked "Sailing..." but I still love "Local Hero". It's a very good movie too.
