What is there to understand?  These were vermin who attacked an innocent couple, attempted to rape his wife and then slaughtered the man in cold blood.  If the 15 year old was just "along for the ride", fine...but I don't need to "understand" these creeps.   There is no justification for this brutality.   My stance on this type of crime is clear...."HANG 'EM".
