Several years ago I read "Balkan Ghosts" by Robert D. Kaplan. One of Kaplan's assertions was that these long multi-generational tribal wars will continue until people have an economic stake in the future...
Great book, BTW Ed. But, after long personal reflection upon history and the nature of Homo Sapiens I have come to a different conclusion, and it's based entirely upon biology, not politics. War will never end (especially tribal wars) despite any shared economical abundance. Why? The male of the human animal species is a warrior and aggressor by nature. This is due to the action of testosterone upon the limbic system of the forebrain. The concentration of testosterone is highest from adolescence to early middle age, then dwindles with aging into senescence (when characteristically men are more passive). He is continually foraging for food to supply his family, and protecting his female companions from penetration by other male human animals. In order to do so, he must protect his kingdom from other invaders and predators (ie other human animals). Unlike animals who travel in packs and act in similar manner, he may enjoy a little torture, rape and pillage along the way (due to his higher "intelligence"), but really it's not so complicated. Just simple biology, and it will continue indefinitely, as long as humans inhabit the planet (which is certainly of finite duration due to Major Extinction phenomena which occur and have occurred in repeated cycles during the documentable Geological time scale). We just intellectualize this basic human behavior and see it under the guise of religion, politics, economics etc...
