It's coming along. I'm desperately trying to change the way I sing,
and it's extremely difficult. But the sounds are fabulous. We've
decided to go with 192k digital, at least for now. We're going to
wheel in a 1" analog four-track later this week for comparison's
sake, but I'm pretty happy with the 192k. So, at least that question
is essentially resolved. We arrived at a good mic package, too, with
two Neumann KM-54s for guitar and either a Neumann U67 or a
Soundelux E251 for vocal, using EAR and API pres. (For those tech
boffins among you) So there are no more sonic excuses. Now it's
just the sometimes painful, sometimes liberating task of
reinventing the way that I pronounce words. To try to get past my
emotional defenses and self-consciousness. Some days are better
than others. My old buddy Dan Schwartz is coaching me through
the process, with his inimitable Acid Rabbi flair. Tough but fair, ol'
Dan is. But sometimes when I open my mouth I feel like the
centipede who asks himself, "hmmmm, now what leg is it that I'm
supposed to start walking with?" Just before he falls flat on his ass.
Or I feel like Eliza Doolittle, getting tormented by Rex Harrison, the
voice coach from hell.
