Yes - every calf born this year will have a name starting with a 'C'. Believe me, it's better than a few years back, when we had 'X', 'Y' and 'Z'!

We always make a list prior to calving by consulting baby names books, encyclopaedias and so on. Then I try to match something in the calf's name with the parents (either by sound or meaning) e.g. a cow called wattle has had two heifers - one Acacia (genus name for wattle) and the other Bramble (another prickly shrub). Another cow, Melody (who will give birth any day now) had a bull calf we named Beethoven last year, but may have a Cantata (female) or Canon (male) this year. Shiraz (also due) is Yasmin's mum (the 'az' sound), but this year may have a calf with another wine name - Champagne, Cabernet, Claret.

They say it takes small things to amuse small minds, and so it shows...
