My Dad has been a Freemason for fifty years - has some special jewel (medal) in recognition. Not sure if it's the same over there as it is here? Dad always maintains that "it's not a secret society, it's a society with secrets". He always points out the charitable work done by Freemasons. In our local community, their fundraising has helped get playground equipment for the school and provide scholarships to the High School for needy students.
Being female and therefore excluded from membership, that's all I know. It's been a positive thing in Dad's life - providing comradery and support, especially after my Mum died.
