Read the 2nd amendment all the way through, though. I'm going to get the verbiage wrong because I don't have it on my PC (I'm in China and they've blocked access to any website that has it...)

But it's something like-- "In order to establish a well maintained militia, Congress shall make no law restricting the right to bear arms". So the founders were talking about maintaining an army of citizen soldiers. Not arming the masses so that "an armed society is a polite society".

Again, sorry for getting the exact words wrong. I'm sure one of you gun nutters has it memorized verbatim. Except, of course, for the part about establishing a militia.
