i had to put down my dear old dog santa fe today.
he was fourteen and had a stroke. He was my faithful and constant friend
and taught my sons a great deal about love and responsibility and
kindness. he was a gentle giant with everyone - large and small -
who crossed his path. i wish i had taken him for a longer long and slow walk this morning and been more patient when he stopped and sniffed some
patch of grass for what seemed like forever. I found this - less maudlin than some - and just want to post it in memory of a great and beloved dog:EPITAPH TO A DOGNear this spot Are deposited the Remains
Of one Who Possessed Beauty
Without Vanity,Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man
Without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning
flattery If inscribed over Human Ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the
Memory of "Boatswain," a Dog
Who was born at Newfoundland,
May, 1803,
And died at Newstead Abbey
Nov. 18, 1808.
