I saw "Flags of Our Fathers" a few weeks ago, and that is a particularly interesting mainstream movie. For me, it's less about World War II and Iwo Jima than it is about the growing postwar dominance of mediagenic, convenient lies over ugly and inconvenient truths... While there is some genuinely harrowing armed combat being filmed, and it is officially a full-scale war movie, with giant moving parts, the real story is a tiny one--how a simple convenient lie can shadow, haunt, and ultimately dominate the lives of a group of men who happen, much to their ultimate dismay, to know the mundane truth about something that no innocent man should. And how they could barely save themselves, much less each other. I highly recommend this movie.
