L.A. just didn’t know what they had back then, did they?
Thought they might, but then the mediocrity of pop-in-general
and the bean-counters/commodity brokers in formation too often
let the good stuff slip between the cracks. Where does clever &
honest ever get anybody anymore? Clean hands, clean face.
Just keep it simple, stupid, &…profit, …profit, …profit.
“Welcome to the boomtown…” Not even the cat at the cutout
record store had ever even heard of it. I suggested he put it on the
turntable. Part way through the intro, he said, “Does this song have
lyrics…or is it only an instrumental?” I asked him to…be patient.
I don’t get it, the first time I heard that guitar intro…I thought
it was the shit. This cat sold me the record without even
showing one iota of sorrow for having let...an artifact
slip through his fingers. As I left the store, I could
see he really didn’t get it. In my hand I had what
I went in there looking for ~~ like no coincidences,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
&, as I head out into the near-comatose city, he puts
another record on the turntable: Bobby McFerrin.
“Don’t worry, be happy…” is a kind of household term.
To some extent…& a Grammy winner, probly still raking
in some residuals for a guy with a good sense of beatbox
& the hook.
&
“Welcome to the boomtown…” …is what…to whom? An
ol’ pal to a few who revisit it on the good days & the bad.
Here I am, half my face & one of my arms swollen with
poison ivy (so far) &
…I don’t get it…. Maybe I never will.
I gota admit, Don’t Worry Be Happy is a catchy tune.
& Robin Williams gives good happy-face.
But I don't feel ambivalent: I know which one I’d shitcan for the other.
