What's happening to em Ed?

They are practicing the dharma. Protesting in a non-violent manner and when provoked are actively (i.e.consciously choosing...) responding with dignity and non-aggression. It's all so straight-forward. They're not 'packing' or reaching for the trigger the way Christians are likely to do when it doesn't go their way.
