Icon David Eugene Edwards and 16 Horsepower

Sometime back,  Blockdog (where's Block been anyway?) mentioned that he had picked up a good deal on a 16 Horsepower CD in a bargain bin at some CD outlet, but failed to mentioned how he liked it.  I don't think he even said which one it was...

A good friend of mine recently made me a fabulous mix from several discs by this band, but she also included some tracks from David Eugene Edward's (16 Horsepower's frontman)  "Woven Hand" solo CD from last year. Maybe it was just the sequence that she put together, but I'm really enjoying it a lot.

For those that don't know, Mr. Edwards is the son of a travelling hellfire and brimstone preacher and much of his lyrics reflect his religious upbringing.  In fact, the rest of the band apparently seems to think that he's a bit too into his religion and it has caused a fair amount of tension within the ranks.  Nevertheless, to me his lyrics, voice and music have an often dark,  haunting quality that very much appeals to me for some reason. Kind of in the same way Triage does I would say. Though he does often borrow from scripture, he somehow makes it his own in a way that I can relate to on a certain level and though I was raised in the Christian church, I'm not a religious man. I do,  however, highly recommend checking these guys out.

Here's a good review of 16 Horsepower's "Secret South" CD.

Amazon has some samples of  "Woven Hand" too.
