"...It seems to me Buddism has a Hell, doesn't it? And evil personified in the person of someone named
Mara, if I recall correct. Perhaps you'd explain how that is any different?"
Buddhist theology does not view Hell as a place but a state of mind and the actions that occur
from a
mind that is agitated by greed, anger, and delusion. The world we live in is the result of the cause and
effect of countless actions, positive and negative, that continue to have a ripple effect, causing in turn,
more effects... & on & on. You don't need to die to be in hell...
Mara is not 'evil' per se, but your own mind manifesting desire, greed, lust, anger, opinions,
judgements, etc; These thoughts, if acted upon, can lead to negative actions: perhaps that's where you
got the idea that 'mara' equates with 'evil'. It's not the same idea and I'm not sure if there is a corollary
in Christian theology.
In zen philosophy at least, 'good', 'evil', 'heaven', 'hell', 'Jesus' and 'Buddha' are all concepts to get
stuck on. More fuel for our monkey minds, which are already predisposed to believing that our
'thoughts' have substance.
I saw a good bumper sticker the other day: "Don't believe everything you think".
