As a dedicated Springsteen fan since 1974, and having seen him at least 35 times, I am compelled to respond to Pat's blanket assertion that Bruce is overrated. I think it's important to differentiate among Bruce in the studio, in concert, and in the public eye. From his debut, Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ, through The Tunnel of Love, I would rate them as being anywhere from very good to uniformly excellent. His output since TOL has been spotty, to say the least. I'm disinclined to individually pick them apart, but imagine that even the most die-hard Brooce acolytes would acknowledge that they don't reach the standards of his earlier works. The Rising has some magnificent songs, while Devils and Dust contains barely a few decent tunes. Just my opinion.Bruce "in concert" is a different story. I know of no other performer (in any art form) who has achieved such a sustained level of excellence. For over thirty years,I've been fortunate to share in these awesome, communal celebrations. My memories of his Darkness-era shows are particularly memorable. I remember wishing that Sunday mass would evoke such passions in me. Lastly, Bruce, the public figure, routinely conducts himself with class and dignity; engaging in numerous charitable endeavors, and speaking out on issues that are important to America. I don't hang on Bruce's every word as I once did. But I surely lend him an ear.Peter T.
