That was exactly my experience, too. I just plain didnt get Bruce until Nebraska, though I loved hearing Born To Run on the radio. But it just didnt have mucg to do with my life, till I ended up with a cassette of Nebraska in my car. Stripped of all the show-band crowdpleasing stuff, I heard him, finally, and became a fan for life. It's funny about him in the studio, though. It's true. Something happens, like somebody painting over a light bulb till you cant see it no more. I know how that goes, though.
