Is rhetoric (criticism) the one art that ought to be kept away from all the others? Is it just because it may spoil the fun?

I'm familiar with Zappa's contention that talking about music is like dancing about architecture. (But I happen to think it's silly.)

Years ago, when teachers could still say things like this in class, a teacher told me that sometimes making art was like sex: If you're thinking about it, you're not really doing it.

Years later, another teacher said "What if you're doing it alone?"
