I guess I must have slept through this event in history class, or perhaps it's one of those stories we just want to sweep under the rug but, last night I watched a PBS program called " The Bonus Army" where in 1932, 17,000 WWI veterans converged on Washington, D.C. to try and secure fair compensation for their lost wages and jobs, etc., $1.25 for each day served.
Of course, the government kept dropping the ball on the bill and the depression had set in.
To make a long story short, since most of you probably know it already, The President oredered the Veterans be evacuated from D.C. and they brought in the Army led by MacArthur with tanks, gas, bayonets and burned out the tent village built by the Vets.
It reminded of this song and it reminded me of the treatment our Veterans of today are receiving.
I could not go to sleep last night. Our army against our army. Who'd have thunk it.
