I used to play the concert flute, and what you're talking about is actually panpipes or pan flute. The Andean panpipes are called zamponas. My mother took me along to see Gheorghe Zamphir play a pan flute concert many moons ago. A little can go a long way in a solo format...but in amongst other instruments, it can be quite haunting. Gheorghe Zamphir played the title track to a very famous Australian film "Picnic at Hanging Rock" - still gives me goose bumps when I hear it. I guess if you did a search on zamponas/panpipes, you'd find some current exponents - I'm about 20 years behind the times!
