Firearm fingerprinting is a little bit different than DNA cataloging though Dan.  While in theory it seems like a good idea, unlike DNA, the signature of a firearm can change over time. This can be due to modifications (ie. barrel, firing pin etc) after the fact or even just wear caused by repeated use of the weapon, thus rendering ballistic statistics much less reliable and certainly not indesputable.  Smooth bore firearms such as shotguns don't even have a signature. So, while I'm all for ideas that reduce crimes committed with guns, I'm not convinced that the huge cost of cataloging and maintaining that ballistic data is really even worth the effort.

The NRA does not support it either.
