Girl, 15, fatally shot on Southeast Side THE BLOTTER 9:27 AM CDT, May 27, 2008

Two people were killed, including a 15-year-old girl, and five others were wounded in unrelated attacks within hours of each other Monday night on Chicago's Southeast Side, authorities said.

Ongoing gang feuds were blamed in at least three of the incidents.

The first shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Monday in the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, police said. The victim was standing on the sidewalk when a gunman approached him from behind and opened fire, striking him five times.

The victim, Frederick Hogan, 27, of the 7200 block of South Marquette Avenue, died en route to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Hogan was a known gang member with more than 40 arrests on his record and had been wanted for questioning in a gang-related homicide, according to detectives. Police were searching for his assailant early Tuesday.

About 10:50 p.m. Monday, two teenage girls were on the street in the 6900 block of South Dorchester Avenue when an unidentified gunman opened fire on them, police said.

Sharkelia Taylor, 15, of the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, was shot in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the medical examiner's office.

The second victim, also in her teens, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital, Banks said.

Police believe the shots may have been fired from a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The motive was under investigation and no one was in custody early Tuesday.

About 20 minutes later, a gunman opened fire on a group of people in a garage in the 7600 block of South Clyde Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, police said.

Paramedics arrived and found three gunshot victims, all males in their late teens or early 20s, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

One was brought to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition with a gunshot wound to a leg. The other two victims suffered arm wounds and were in fair condition at Jackson Park Hospital, Langford said.

Witnesses said the gunman may have been in a blue Chevrolet Impala that drove through the alley and fired into an open garage. The car was last seen fleeing west from the crime scene, police said. The motive appeared to be gang-related.

Finally, at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, a man was shot while walking in the 8900 block of South Brandon Avenue, also in the South Shore neighborhood.

Police said the gunman pulled up in a white van and shouted gang slogans before opening fire on the victim. The man was shot in the back of the head and buttocks and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious but stable condition.

An AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun that may have been used in the attack were found discarded a few blocks away from the scene, police said. The gunman remained at large Tuesday morning.
