The 'attention' you describe lead to the deaths of 50,000 US troops and three million Vietnamese men, women, and children Ross- many of them civilians. The US intervened in a civil war. Ho Chi Minh was a communist, sure, but he was first and foremost a nationalist trying to free his country from colonial forces: French, Japanese, and American.

Vietnam is today nominally a 'communist' country, but if you want to know who really won the war, go to the brightly-lit Department store near the old Hanoi Hilton and buy yourself some Samsonite luggage and a pair of Calvin Klein jeans...

The Vietnamese have moved on by the way... it' sonly us who are still fighting that war.
