Icon Republican future

Sure the Republicans are going to try to make Obama, and the Democratic majority, look as bad as possible but it's up to Obama & Co. to make that impossible, simply by doing a good job. That's no easy task but it's what they signed up for. If the country does well by 2012, the Republicans will only sound strident if they just criticize and obstruct constructive action.

Violence? Not on a large scale, I think. There's sure to be tough talk, scary talk, but these people don't back up their mouths very well. I'm not concerned about riots or even major protests. Small scale violence, especially assination, is all too possible though. One set of skinheads already has been caught in the planning stage and there could easily be a group or groups out there who could be dangerous indeed. Keep your fingers crossed for Obama's safety and hope nothing flukey gets by the security boys.

I live in the big red middle of the country and I know any number of Republican types who despise Palin. To me, it seems to break more on the basis of education and intellectual curiosity than geography. To put it crudely, habitual readers don't think much of Palin, the illiterate love her.

In addition, I've been surprised at the vehement, venomous hatred that not a few of women have for Palin. This holds especially for really hard-working women, the kind who put themselves through school and built and run their own businesses while raising a family. Republican, Democratic or Independent, they equate Palin's "hotness" with sluttiness and recall many instances in their own lives where they were beaten out for a grade or job or opportunity by some bitch with big tits.

We might be looking at a real schism in the Republican party beween the ant-intellectuals and the country-clubbers. The party bosses, starting with Nixon and climaxing with Reagen, welcomed the yahoos' votes but never gave them much in terms of respect or delivery. Bush hasn't delivered for them either but his crew has certainly enflamed their sense of importance. Maybe they'll take over the show, whether with Palin as a figurehead, more likely with somebody more clever and cynical at the helm.

In that case the GOP could split, probably into a rump party of know-nothings and a new, right-center, business party. One can hope, anyway.
