I've had both good and bad experiences with remasters. When the first wave of compact discs came out there was a rush to market with product and a lot of stuff hit the shelves in very crappy form.

There was a load of remasters before 24bit came along and then DSD, SACD, etc.

Each remaster depends a lot on who is twiddling the knobs. ( compression, source, taste of the engineer play a role )

Dark Side of The Moon has been remastered a bunch of times. ( or has it ? ) At least that's what it says on the 20th Anniversary edition, the Shine On Boxed Set edition, the 30th Anniversary edition and of course the SACD version. Was it really re-remastered each of these times ?

I have indeed put on a remaster and immediately noticed vast improvement as well, more warmth, lush tone and clarity of quiter moments.

It's kind of hit and miss. If you have the very first edition from those early days, I'd say, go for it.

You can usually count on Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs to produce a superior remaster. A lot of the "best value" type issues, eh. ( hit or miss )

The Deluxe series is a pretty good bet with all the extra bonus material that most of them include. I have quite a few of those.

If you are into Porcupine Tree, I highly recommend their remasters, not only for the bonus material but, Steve Wilson has remixed a lot of older material to include new drumming parts from Gavin harrison.

Bill Gates hit upon it, it's called "versions" and some of us are suckers for to buy them all. lol
