Where did you find a copy of the "The Keep"?
VHS. A big fat cassette with fast-forward and rewind instead of instant tracking. Archaic, sorta intimidating to use, but we kept them around to keep the VHS players company.
Yes, Mann’s made very good films (& with an edge ~~ in interview, Mann appears to personally reflect that edge into his films). It’s why I’m shocked by the audacity and repeal his Hollywood efforts with F. Paul Wilson’s epic story of the most ancient of ancient neutral vs. evil battles. There are cinematic highpoints in the film, but his dismissal of FPW’s storyline…jeez, would’ve done less damage had he snuck into Wilson’s house late at night, clubbed him on the bean, tied him to his daughter’s hope chest and raped him there in front of his family. Had he put half as much sincerity into The Keep as he did The Insider or Last of the Mohicans, …wait, it was about half…and half wasn’t good enough. Three/fourths then.
If you ever locate the film, I wouldn’t recommend buying it…just rent it.
[Then again, this is the dbis so, hell, odds are you’ll like the gothic pulp & condemn the novel.]
If you must own it, here it is on VHS… (Do you still have a tape player?)
But ... read the novel first? Then (maybe) you’ll get to feel the sting.
F. Paul Wilson’s The Adversary Cycle is:
The Keep (originally published in 1981)
The Tomb (Repairman Jack is introduced)
The Touch
Reborn
Reprisal
Nightworld
...An all-round excellent fantasy about semi-neutral-good vs. evil; love, lager, demons & other hang-ups
